I'm an assistant professor of Japanese Studies at Middlebury College. Right after the pandemic, I was on my sabbatical and I was getting desperate to go to Japan, but Japan still had its borders closed to foreigners. So, after they opened the borders, I had two weeks to arrange everything. I hadn't bought a ticket. I didn't know where I would stay.
