Description

I'm a professor of History at Northeastern and my partner is an economist. We are usually away for the summer, and have for the past few years rented a place via Sabbatical Homes in London. We figured we might as well put our place (which has in the past had friends staying while we've been gone) on SH as well. Our house is in Jamaica Plain. We live in the entire upper unit of a two-family Victorian. For this listing, we are planning to block off the master bedroom and nursery, so that you'll have the run of the main floor (two living rooms, study, dining room, kitchen, bedroom and full bath, and access to the laundry and another study and full bath upstairs. (Just to be clear: nobody else will be living in the unit, we just prefer not to move stuff out of closets in our bedroom and would prefer our child's room to be left undisturbed). That said, if you have a need for a second bedroom, we can think about how to accomodate that need. Jamaica Plain is one of the gems of Boston's famed Emerald Necklace, a network of green spaces designed by Olmsted in the 19th Century. Our house is a 3 min walk from Jamaica Pond, and 5 minutes by foot from the Arnold Arboretum, both stunning in the summer. We are also 2 mins walk from Centre Street, & South St, JP's commercial hubs, with their excellent coffee shops (Jadu, Viza, Siete, Nero, Fiori, etc), a fantastic independent bookstore (Papercuts), several hairdressers and barbers, a delightful small deli/grocery (City Feed and Supply), hardware stores, a Whole Foods and Happy Market for groceries, a great fishmonger, dentists, excellent Mexican, Korean, Thai, pan-Asian, Italian (Tonino - hard to get a table though!), and New American, as well as the Sam Adams Brewery within walking distance. The public library and pool are across Centre St from our intersection (so a 3 min walk). The 39 bus runs every 10 mins to Back Bay and will take you to the Museum of Fine Arts, Northeastern, MassArt, etc. ; and we are a seven minute walk from the Green St stop on the Orange Line of Boston's "T" (subway/metro), The Brewery complex also has an excellent Scottish bar (great whisky selection) and a beyond the Whole Foods you have Ethiopian, Cuban, Indian/Nepali and great pizza. Our place would suit a single academic or couple. There is a nursery upstairs for our baby and if you have a child, we can discuss making it available. Theres' a washer and dryer in the unit, and you also have exclusive access to our backyard. Finally, truly lovely people live downstairs, and opposite our hosue is the Eliot School of Crafts, where you can take all sorts of classes, and on our street is also America's oldest community theater. And did we mention Thursdays on the Lawn, which runs all summer, and involves beer trucks, wine trucks, and food on the lawn of the Loring Greenough House (next to the library). We can have our cleaners come as often as you;'d like if desired.

Comments: Our home is in a really lovely, leafy part of Boston - the Jamaica Plain neighborhood. Northeastern University, Simmons College, Mass College of Art, and the School at the Museum of Fine Arts are all easily accessible by bus (#39, v frequent) or by bicycle (using the Southwest Corridor). You can also bike to MIT using the bike path along the Emerald Necklace, but might be better off taking the 'T' (Boston's subway/metro system) where we are a 7 minute walk from the Green St stop on the Orange Line, which connects to the Red Line (which takes you to MIT/Kendall and Harvard stops). Our place is a 3 min walk from Jamaica Pond and a 5 minute walk from the Arnold Arboretum, both of which offer beautiful walks, plenty of birdlife, and even boating (at the Pond). Centre and South Streets are at the end of our street, so about a 2 min walk, and have excellent cafes (Jadu, Monument Coffee, Viza, Cafe Siete, Caffe Nero), as well as an excellent little grocery store about a 5 min walk away (City
