I bought this small home as a writer's retreat, and it has served those ends exceptionally well. I was charmed by the Umbrian village of Penna in Teverina on account of its well-preserved medieval center; proximity to vineyards, hot springs, and historic sites (such as Marmore Falls, Sacro Bosco, and Castello Ruspoli); and easy access to Rome and Florence thanks to the high-speed train line in the neighboring town of Orte. (The express train to Rome takes about 45 minutes, and the express to Florence around an hour.) Despite being a small hill-top village, Penna has the necessities one needs for a writing retreat: a local bar/cafe, restaurant, pizzeria, bakery, corner shop, cleaners, post office, and a small market. Nevertheless, I would recommend renting a car to explore the surrounding area, including the towns of Giove, Amelia, Narni, and neighboring Orte -- all within 20-30 minutes drive. I would be happy to offer recommendations. The home itself is historic--it's part of the original medieval wall of the village--but recently renovated, with a new wood-burning fire stove, gas heat radiators, mini-split AC units, and fiber optic internet. The apartment has two floors, with the entrance, kitchen and living room/office on the first floor and the bedroom and bathroom on the second and top floor. The kitchen has a charming wood-burning stove that I installed in the fireplace last winter, and the living room/office includes a fold-out sofa (sleeps two), 55" wall-mounted smart TV, and custom-made pine writing desk. Upstairs, you'll find the bathroom with a skylight (sink, shower, toilet, bidet, and a brand-new washer unit) and the primary bedroom with a wall-length armoire and a large bed (either a Queen or King, I'm not sure), with a new foam mattress. Both rooms have mini-splits (air conditioning) and gas radiators (heat), ensuring the home is comfortable for all seasons. Suffice it to say, this little pied-à-terre is quite dear to me, and I want to rent it out selectively to other academics and professionals who will appreciate its charms and act as respectful caretakers in my stead. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions!

Comments: Nestled within the medieval walls of a typical Umbrian town (Penna in Teverina), this home offers a quiet, peaceful retreat for writing. Nearby, you'll find hot springs, vineyards, charming towns and villages, and a high-speed train line in Orte.
Comments: While I have listed the weekly rental rate, I'm happy to accommodate long-term stays.
Comments: In the first floor office, there is a fold-out sofa that could easily sleep two children. With that said, there are stairs and a wood-burning stove that might not be ideal for small children. Pets can be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Comments: About 10 meters from the entrance is a lovely terrace with sunset views of the countryside. I would recommend a rental car to explore the area. Although there isn't parking in the historic center, there are many free spaces just outside the walls.

Comments: I have a friend who lives in town who serves as my property manager. She speaks Italian and English fluently should you have any questions.
