Short Summary - The Chamberlain house is located in the heart of Madison, three blocks from UW hospital and six blocks to the lake shore. Built in 1915, we bought this Arts and Crafts style house when we moved back to Madison in 1991 with two of our three daughters. We are only the second owners of the home and all improvements to the house over the 35 years are in keeping with the historic profiles. The house has all the original woodwork, built in cabinetry, fireplace and hardwood maple floors and ceiling beams. To accommodate our growing family we designed and rebuilt the entire second floor making it an open, spacious, bright 1000 square foot master bedroom with a second living room, a 12x8 sundeck, a 12x12 master bathroom with wet room/ jacuzzi tub and a second laundry. We also redesigned and expanded the kitchen layout to feature custom built floor to ceiling oak cabinets made to match all original built ins, and an eat in kitchen overlooking the garden with a large picture window. Over the past 3 decades we designed and built a garden sanctuary, hauling in stones from many places to craft stone steps and rocks walls, two decks, a brick patio, and a brick walkway with new drain tile. A new custom lattice fence allows light to stream through and offers plenty of privacy was just rebuilt. All electric, HVAC and plumbing has been completely updated to meet all current standards. Our latest improvement is a 14x8 Sauna room with a Finnish HUM sauna heater with remote control . Recent new water heater, furnace and air conditioner More detailed description THE KITCHEN - renovated in early 2000 we contracted a cabinet maker to custom build all the floor to ceiling cabinets to match all the original oak built in the living room and dining room. Our eat in kitchen nook is designed for long coffee/tea conversations - situated under a six foot opening picture window with south facing exposure and view of the hand built rock garden allows the sun to stream in the kitchen all day in the winter - making it the perfect place to write, bake, or work form home . Other features include soapstone countertops and farm sink , Sub Zero fridge, Bosch dishwasher, a Dacor gas stove with downdraft extractor vent. THE LIVING ROOM - has a beautiful handmade chartreuse wool area rug that warms up the custom built leaded glass book cases, wood ceiling beams and red brick fireplace and mantel. A high efficiency wood burning insert is a dream in the winter making it an easy place to hunker down. THE DINING ROOM-our custom built mission oak table sit atop a wool area rug and expands to seat 14. The original 8 foot leaded glass china hutch has all the glassware and china needed for those special winter dinner parties. THE MASTER BEDROOM - Along with all the features listed above there is a comfortable adjustable king bed with remotes and a GHOSTBED mattress. All linens, down comforter and pillows are cotton. Two oversized vintage Crate and Barrels chairs with ottomans, area rugs and other furnishings make this a very easy room to decompress. The sun and breeze come into the room from all directions with two skylights and ten large tall casement windows cover by custom made ivory velvet slat curtains. The living room area sits in front of the patio doors leading to sundeck. In the fall months low sunlight pours through the skylights and filters through to warm the space. FISRT FLOOR BEDROOMS AND BATHROOM- There are two first floor bedrooms , one x large first floor bedroom with south and west exposure, a door leading to the garden and deck . This room has a king bed. The smaller bedroom has been revisioned as a media room with a very large movie watching flat screen. It has a small sectional that converts to a sofa sleeper . FIRST FLOOR BATHROOM - this is a bright, cheery west facing room tiled with a white subway tile to the ceiling , white ceramic tile floor and a new glass shower and pedestal sink .
