Description

This is a beloved flat. We bought it expecting to settle here permanently, since one of us was working at the University of Glasgow. Then life got in the way. But we remain so attached to Glasgow that we're keeping some roots here. We’re renting the flat during the academic year and returning for summers. This is an historic tenement flat in Garnethill, a lovely neighborhood. It’s ideally located between the West End (Kelvingrove Park, Univ. of Glasgow, Byres Road, Botanic Gardens) and the City Centre (Merchant City, Univ. of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian Univ., Glasgow School of Art). All are easily accessible, within 35 mins walk or 15 mins on bus/subway, and quicker via bicycle. We are 2 mins walking from Cowcaddens subway station, 4 mins from the bustling Sauchiehall St, and 13 mins from Buchanan St, the main pedestrian street in the city. You can find all your essentials on Sauchiehall Street: the nearest grocery (Tesco) is 4 mins away, and there are other markets, pharmacies, restaurants, clothing/retail all along the street. We are 3 mins from the Glasgow Film Theatre, the city’s independent cinema. The flat is 9 mins walking from Buchanan Bus Station, 18 mins from Queen St Station, and 17 mins from Glasgow Central Station. These are the city's main hubs for travel - Buchanan has a 30-min shuttle bus to the airport leaving every 15 mins, Edinburgh is 45-min by train from Queen, and so on. England-bound trains leave from Central, from which it's also easy to cross the River Clyde to Glasgow’s South Side. Many of Glasgow's most beautiful and iconic places are close by: you can reach Kelvingrove Park, George Square, and the Clyde all within 20 mins walking, or the Cathedral and Necropolis walking 30 mins in the other direction. Garnethill Park, one of the only green spaces in the city centre, is just one block over. Port Dundas canal paths are 10 mins away. As for the flat itself: This 1-bedroom flat measures about 60 square metres. We renovated it ourselves so most of it is in very good condition. The one exception is the kitchen, which has old counters and cupboards, but the appliances are in fine shape. There’s an induction stovetop, hob (oven), under-counter refrigerator, and full-size freezer. There’s also a full set of crockery and utensils, as well as small appliances (microwave, toaster oven, Instant Pot, countertop hob), all for your use. There's a washing machine and an old-fashioned air-drying rack. As per historical use, in the other half of the kitchen there’s an extra trundle bed that can be extended to two single beds - great for visitors! The lounge (living room) has a sofa that also folds down into a bed, a reclining reading chair, and a 55" TV. There’s a desk with a desktop computer to connect to wifi plus an Ergotron workstation for standing laptop use, which includes an extra monitor, keyboard, and mouse. There's enough space in the lounge to do yoga (we have two mats). You're welcome to all this. The bathroom has an efficient shower with instant hot water, a bathtub, towel rack, shelf, and mirror cabinet. The bedroom has a UK king size bed (U.S. queen). Linens (comforter, sheets, towels) are all there for you to use. The flat is on what’s considered the first floor in the UK (one level up from the ground floor), which is unfortunately not wheelchair-accessible. It’s heated with a boiler and a series of adjustable radiators - normal UK setup. There's a communal backyard with grass and a picnic table. We keep personal belongings in the flat, but other than books on shelves these will be packed away. There's plenty of storage space for your things: 2/3 of a large 3-door wardrobe (armoire) and a full-size shelf in the bedroom, two cupboards and some bookcase shelves in the lounge, plus a large shelf and shoe/coatrack in the entryway. If you have any questions, please send a message! We love our flat, and hope you will too.
