We are a family of four: Alana, John, our spirited two-year-old daughter, and Alana’s mother, who lives with us. Our home is an intergenerational household filled with books, conversation, and a love of gardens and community. Alana works in architectural design and spends much of her time caring for our daughter and supporting her mother. (j)ohn is a professor of Law, Ethnic Studies, and African American Studies at University of California, Berkeley and directs the Othering & Belonging Institute. Much of our work and life centers around questions of belonging, community, and creating spaces where people can thrive. Our home reflects this spirit. It’s a place where friends and colleagues gather for meals and conversation, where mornings begin slowly with tea in the fog, and where afternoons might be spent reading on the porch or in the garden. We keep a small library of books on social justice, mind science, history, and related fields, along with toddler toys and children’s books that bring a sense of playfulness to the space. The garden is also part of the life of the house. Depending on the season, there are greens, lemons, berries, and herbs, and guests are welcome to harvest and enjoy what’s growing. Why We’re Renting We’ll be living in Berlin this summer (mid-May through mid-August) while john conducts research and reporting on belonging across European countries through a fellowship supported by the Bosch Foundation. During that time, we’re hoping to find a thoughtful person or family—ideally someone connected to the academic or creative community and with a home to return to come fall —who would enjoy living in and caring for our home while we’re away. We’re looking for someone who appreciates quiet spaces, books, gardens, and the rhythms of a lived-in home. Our hope is to find guests who will treat the house with care and enjoy it as we do.
