Our house is a converted munitions factory and YWCA hostel– featured in the Maurice Gee’s book Ellie and the Shadowman, if you’re an NZ literature fan! It is definitely not in the most salubrious of streets but is in a neighbourhood and suburb that offers many exciting possibilities for people wanting to make the most of an academic year in New Zealand/Aotearoa, and in the Wellington Region. The house is one of four in a terrace row, and in 2015 that is the result of an intentional community project, which included seismic strengthening and thermal upgrade. It is a wonderful neighbourhood with great neighbours and families If you are travelling with family and want to meet people, ‘the block’ is an instant community. We share a larger common area as well as each house having their own garden. We also share excellent compost, (but this is strictly optional and will not be your responsibility) The common area provides a safe place to play with lots of other kids in the neighbourhood. And we have a trampoline! It's a small house but cheap to run (fully insulated, double-glazed, solar powered). If you know anything about Wellington houses you may have read that, in spite of our temperate south pacific climate, we live cold and draughty in the winter. We are pleased to say that this is not the case with our house. If it's not needed as an office, the studio could be a fourth bedroom, or… a studio! The location is so convenient, with an mini market and train station at the end of the street, and more extensive shopping within ten minutes’ drive or cycle. Libraries and parks are all within an easy walk or cycle. The Hutt Valley is well set up for cycling, especially along the river and on cycle paths, with excellent mountain bike tracks very nearby. In March the Te Ara Tupua Great Harbour cycleway will be open - we would love to leave you our e-bike if a worldclass commute to work is on your bingo card for 2026! There are cultural sites nearby – Waiwhetu Marae – and the Dowse Art Gallery. It is replete with recreational facilities, - an Olympic sized swimming pool down the road - and absent of the weekend traffic that clogs Wellington on the weekends. We are vacating the house for the year to travel with our children, and would love to offer someone the opportunity to experience a New Zealand life from our little corner.
