This is a Victorian conversion with high ceilings, huge windows, wooden floors, a fireplace, and lots and lots of natural light. There’s a quiet bedroom upstairs with a desk and chair overlooking trees. It’s a great place to work. The bathroom, with full bath and shower (and very good water pressure!) is upstairs too. A bright kitchen and separate high-ceilinged living room are downstairs, with a generous workspace at the table here as well. There are many bookshelves and a small library. It’s all been recently refurbished, including new floors, new refrigerator, and a brand new boiler. The flat is calm and self-contained – but so close to the centre of London: the theatres of the West End and Covent Garden, for instance, are only 20 minutes underground ride away. Central Paris, too, for that matter – one stop on the underground and you’re at the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras (where of course there are also trains to Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands). Not to mention being on a direct line to Heathrow. It’s a walk or short bus ride to the restaurants, gastropubs, independent shops, cinemas and theatres Islington (including the world-class Almeida and Sadler’s Wells); an easy walk to the huge wealth of restaurants, bars and higher-end shopping at Kings Cross and Coal Drops Yard (Barrafina, Spiritland, Dishoom, the Everyman Cinema, Lower Stable Street Market etc etc.), and just round the corner from the many Ethiopian restaurants of the Caledonian Road. The flat is not far from the famed squares of Bloomsbury, while Regent’s Canal, at the bottom of the Caledonian Road, provides a scenic stroll through the Camley Street Nature Reserve, then Camden Market, past London Zoo, Regent’s Park (one of the great parks of London) and Little Venice. I’ve always really liked that while my flat is within easy reach of many grand areas, it is in everyday, normal central London, the area immortalised in the classic novel by George and Weedon Grossmith, The Diary of a Nobody. There’s a local chippy, builders’ merchants, post office depot, corner shops, local swimming pool, supermarkets to suit all budgets (ie lots of sensible, useful things), rooted locals who have lived in the area for decades. Full disclosure - the front of the flat is on a busy-ish road, the back is very quiet. There is wi-fi, but no tv.
