The apartment with a large and beautiful terrace is located in the center of Orvieto. Orvieto, in Umbria, Italy, is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre of Etruscan origin. Orvieto rises on a a 150-metre-high tufa cliff emerging, much like an island, from the surrounding landscape that is full of olives, sunflowers, wheat, and the vineyards that produce the famous Orvieto Classico white wine. The city's distinctive feature comes from the particular relationship between this sheer cliff and the fabric of the city dominated by its glorious historical gothic cathedral. The medieval and renaissance fabric of the city is fully intact with important palaces, museums, and piazze. It is also a vibrant contemporary small city with traditional festivals throughout the year and an international jazz festival held each year between Christmas and New Years Day. The food is fantastic featuring wild boar, truffles, homemade pasta, local greens, and cheeses. That is not even mentioning the wonderful breads and pastries. Whether you eat out or in, you can easily shop in the market and local shops for delicacies to bring home and share on the terrace. It has the feeling of being a remote Italian hilltown, yet it is easy to get to by car or train. It is 1.5 hours from the center of Rome and just over that to get to Florence. You can arrive from Fiumicino Airport in Rome and with one train change arrive directly to Orvieto. From the train, there is a funicular to get to the historic hilltown and from there it is a short 0.5 km walk to the apartment, or there is a convenient small bus. The apartment is in the center of the historic town with a bi-weekly market steps away and access to all the shops and markets on the main street, also steps away. I acquired the apartment last year and it is updated and tastefully furnished and includes the use of good quality bed and bath linens and a fully appointed kitchen. If you travel by train, everything you need is in the historic town -- or by local bus to a small, but tasteful, shopping center in Orvieto Scalo 15 minutes away. By train you may easily reach Rome, Florence, Perugia, Siena and other neighboring areas. If you arrive by car, there is local parking with good options for parking garages and street parking. There is a fee but there are good options for 3 and 5 day passes, and there is free parking at the train station at Orvieto Scalo, near the train station. With a car, the exploration is endless: Lago di Bolsena, Assisi, Perugia, Cortona, Civita di Bagnioregio and other notable places in Umbria. Orvieto sits at the border of Tuscany and Lazio and trips to Montepulciano, Pienza, or Siena are great day trips. I often have dinner with friends in Rome and am home in 1:15 hours by car. As a scholar, the space is a wonderful place to work, steps to all the amenities and piazze of the town, but quiet and comfortable with a large terrace almost impossible to find in Orvieto to extend your working and living space. It is inspiring to be in this small city, that while visited by tourists, is still a vibrant and longstanding community that welcomes visitors. This is a one bedroom space, but in the living area, the sofa converts to a sofabed and is comfortable to host another two people. I have furnished the apartment and you should find everything you may need in the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. It is a special place, so deeply historic yet easy to access.
