I’m a faculty member and department head at Texas A&M University, about two hours from Austin. Austin has been my home on weekends and holidays for twenty years, but my current administrative role now keeps me in College Station much of the week. As a result, I’m opening up my East Austin home to visiting scholars, writers, or others seeking a peaceful and well-appointed place to stay. I've rented to visitors off and on over the last 15 years and have had great experiences -- and I think you will as well. This isn’t just a rental -- it’s alternated between being my my primary home and personal getaway, a place I love deeply. I've hosted sabbatical faculty, visiting academics, and writers over the years, many of whom have told me how peaceful and energizing the space feels. I find the same. About the House The home is a 1,000-square-foot, one-bedroom, one-bath 1930s bungalow that has been (lovingly) restored. It features the original wood in two rooms and 12-foot ceilings, an open floor plan, and abundant natural light throughout. The layout includes a living room, a study, an open kitchen/dining area, the bedroom, and a bathroom with a clawfoot tub and shower. It’s fully furnished and thoughtfully stocked -- from cookware and utensils to cleaning supplies and even Band-Aids. I’m a firm believer that if something essential is missing, it should be added -- so if you discover a need, I’ll likely be more embarrassed than annoyed and will make it right. The Outdoor Space The property features xeriscaped gardens in front and back, with perennials blooming most months out of the year (cf., winter). Yard/garden maintenance is included. The entire property is fully fenced and gated for privacy and security. Although street parking is available, you'll have one secured parking spot for your use. A shed is available for extra storage, and I have a couple of bicycles you're welcome to use for exploring the area. The Neighborhood: East Austin To me, East Austin (Holly Neighborhood) is far and away the most livable and interesting neighborhood in the city. The house is located just two blocks from Lady Bird Lake and the Hike & Bike Trail, offering quick access to running, biking, and paddling. The neighborhood is highly walkable and bike-friendly, with a mix of modest historic bungalows, tastefully expanded contemporaries, and a few spectacular architectural crimes that can contribute to an evening's discussion. All is set among a strong lineup of restaurants, lounges, food trucks, and music venues. You’ll find everything from legendary barbecue to vegan food trucks, cocktail lounges to breakfast tacos -- all within walking or biking distance. The new Whole Foods and HEB-Plus are both nearby. The UT campus is just three miles away by bike, and the Texas Capitol is along the way. Despite being so central, our block is quiet and residential, made up primarily of single-family homes, with fantastic neighbors. If you like reading or working in public spaces, two public libraries are within a mile (both on Cesar Chavez), as are two coffee shops. Downtown Austin is a brief walk or ride. A Note About the Back Studio There’s a small studio apartment behind the house, which I will use for occasional visits -- just a few days a month, and always with advance notice. The main house will be entirely yours, and odds are we’d only cross paths if we decide to share a drink. Final Details - Fully furnished - All bills paid (utilities, Wi-Fi, yard/garden maintenance) - One secured parking spot - High-speed internet and printer - Bikes available for use - Flexible lease terms - Ideal for sabbatical faculty, writers, visiting researchers, or anyone seeking a peaceful Austin stay This is a place for someone who will love and enjoy it -- not just stay in it. If that sounds like you, I’d be happy to connect.
