THE VILLAGE Remarkably well-preserved medieval village with a rich history as both a spiritual and political center. It is located roughly three-quarters of the way between Lausanne and the Vallorbe French border, nestled in a valley with the Nozon River flowing through. A tourist attraction, the village is quite lively in season. What makes it truly unique is its population: a mix of farmers, artists, intellectuals, and spiritual seekers looking for peace and inspiration away from bustling lakeside cities, yet still within reach of them. It’s surprisingly international given its size. If you enjoy nature alongside arts and culture, you will likely be very happy here. The landscape is lovely, perfect for hikes and gentle walks. There are frequent cultural activities, in the field of music (from classical concerts in the Abbatiale to experimental performances), visual arts, and literature. It’s a good place to find peace, focus, study or create, without feeling isolated. If you wish to alternate between retreating into a cosy homely nest, to connect with your inner self, and stepping out to meet the world, just outside the door or further around, you may fall in love with Romainmôtier just as I did. From a broader perspective, it can also be a good base to travel around from, given its quite central location within Switzerland and Europe. Everyday Practicalities Shops : There is a self service farm shop and a good bakery in the village. For larger grocery shopping you need to go to Orbe or La Sarraz. Dining out : There are 2 restaurants, 2 tea-rooms, one beer bar in the village. Public transport : - Romainmôtier is on the bus line between Orbe and the Vallée de Joux. - Croy Romainmôtier train station is on the train line between Renens (regional hub next to Lausanne) and Vallorbe (TGV to Paris). By public transportation, it takes approximately 1 hour door to door to UNIL/EPFL (versus 1/2 hour from center Lausanne) , depending on the time of the day and wether week days or week end (check Mobile CFF train app for details) Medical care : Available in Orbe and Yverdon. THE APARTMENT If you love old stone buildings but also appreciate modern comfort, this place offers the best of both worlds. I’ve arranged the space to be both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Two mezzanines take full advantage of the high ceilings — a small one in the entrance with a spare single bed, and a large one in the bedroom with a 180x200 cm bed and a space for study or creative work. I have chosen plain wood furniture and decorated the flat in a personalised, nonetheless reasonably sober, style. Included amenities Large wardrobe and multiple storage spaces Two desks: one mid-size with a computer screen, and a smaller one on the mezzanine Spacious living room with three French doors opening to a balcony overlooking the garden and river, dining area with a big table and quite large sofa area, both comfortably hosting up to 6 guests. Fully equipped kitchen Balcony with a small table, two chairs and a deck chair Shared garden with tables, benches, and a barbecue (informal arrangement among neighbors) Washing machine Books, games, and art supplies Indoor parking space in shared parking area The flat is ideal for inviting friends over for a meal and can comfortably host a couple and/or an individual guest overnight. However, subletting is not permitted. Rental Conditions Fixed-term lease Proof of sufficient income required Three months’ rent paid in advance as a security deposit The flat must be returned clean and in the same condition as upon arrival Swiss civil liability insurance (RC) required to cover potential serious damage Compliance with all legal obligations, including payment of local taxes for the duration of the stay. This place is my beloved secondary home, but I’m currently focusing my time and energy on another project with my partner, which is why I’m temporarily renting it out
