Sarteano, in the province of Siena in Tuscany Region of Italy, offers an excellent quality of life at 573m (1883ft) above sea level and has something for every age. It lies in the heart of Val di Chiana and Val d'Orcia among olive groves and vineyards and wonderful people....farmers, intellectuals, artists, poets, music composers, well, just a great community of people. I fell in love with this area many moons ago and never cease to appreciate the beauty of the characteristic towns, the varied cuisine, the peace and quiet I always find here especially, the tranquil and relaxing lifestyle in a typical Italian borgo. I can speak English, Italian, Spanish, French, German and a bit of Portugese. FYI I live in the area! The property is bright and quiet and easily accommodates families, couples and singles of all ages (up to 4 people max.). A myriad of conveniences and services are within walking distance and the town center is 3 minutes away on foot. The market day is Friday and there, you will find an abundance of fresh products at reasonable prices. This is a wonderful area of Tuscany with much to discover. I love it and hope you will too. The property is an easy commute to Rome or Florence as the A1 Autostrada del Sole exit is 5 km from the town. The closest railway station is Chiusi-Chianciano Terme, 8 kms away. A short drive will bring you to many towns and cities in Tuscany and Umbria, too like Siena, Montepulciano, Pitigliano, Montalcino, Cetona, Pienza (where the film the English Patient was filmed), Cortona (Under the Tuscan Sun's original setting), Chianciano, Radicofani, Chiusi, Bonconvento, Assisi, Perugia, Spello, Orvieto, Todi, Citta' della Pieve and Castiglione del Lago (on Lake Trasimeno). Hikers are sure to enjoy the surrounding areas and the Francigena Walk (for those of all faiths) goes through the Val d'Orcia and arrives in Rome. Many towns and municipalities offer art, music, theater and festivals like Orvieto Jazz and Umbria Jazz in Perugia. Nearby is La Foce and in Sarteano itself we have Castiglioncello del Trinoro, the recently restored Medieval borgo with international music and theater festivals year round. The area also has cooking, art, language and ceramic schools if you want to pursue other interests or hidden talents. There are many archeological sites as the Etruscan Civilization flourished in central Italy from 900 to 27 BC (depending on which historical description you are reading). Thermal baths and spas are in large abundance in places like Bagni San Filippo, Rapolano Terme, Bagni Vignoni, Chianciano Terme and Saturnia and wine, olive and cheese tastings are available with or without appointment. . The seaside Grosetto, Ansedonia, Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano are only 90 minutes away by car and offer gorgeous, clean beaches and stupendous seaside views while the lagoon of Orbetello is a wonderful nature reserve with a 21 km (13.5 mile) bike route. There are many lakes in the area, great for day trips: Lake Vagli, Lake Burano, Lake Trasimeno, Lake Chiusi, Lake Montepulciano, Lake Bilancino, Lake Bolsena and others.
