DC is a great walking city and, if you desire, you can walk to Dupont Circle in 40 minutes and the National Mall in 90 minutes along leafy streets. For public transport, easy bus service (in front of building, including express downtown buses during morning and evening rush hour) and Metro access via Red line (15 minute walk) to Dupont Circle and Downtown (Federal agencies, Library of Congress and Smithsonian) and beyond to Union Station (Amtrak and regional trains) or to Washington National (DCA) or Washington Dulles (IAD)--both airports accessible by Metro. The upper-Northwest quadrant of the city is full of parks that extend into neighboring Maryland--including the C&O Canal National Historical Park, where, a 30 minute walk from the apartment, you can hike the nearly 200-mile (320 km) towpath to the mountains. In addition to dining and coffee, you are steps from a Giant Food supermarket and CVS pharmacy and shops. 10 minutes farther, the new City Ridge center with DC's first Wegman's supermarket and new stylish shops and dining. DC is home to some of the nation's best research libraries and museums, a concentration of Federal research agencies and leading university research centers, and national and global advocacy organizations.
