Gunmakers name derives from when the property was a gun shop in the 18th Century. Its location is inside the original Portsmouth Garrison behind a defensive wall which surrounded the garrison. Redevelopment & extension now allows modern bathrooms & a modern kitchen with high quality appliances. The property was burnt down during WW2 & rebuilt in 1953. The Deanery to the cathedral is the neighbour on the west side. The beachfront promenade extends 3 miles to the east & is an excellent walk past Clarence & South Parade Piers, Canoe Lake, Southsea castle & Fort Cumberland. Walking to the west is atop the battlements & saluting platform, above the Arches art workshops & into Old Portsmouth Point overlooking the main harbour. When doing so the walk passes Square Tower from where convicts departed for Australia in the 18th Century & is commemorated by a sculpture of chain links repeated on Circle Quay in Sydney Australia. Round Tower which originally housed harbour defence cannons now offers an excellent coffee & lunch venue called the Canteen. The sights and sounds continue through Point and camber Dock where an excellent fresh fish market is offered. Enjoy your stay in Gunmakers.
