Originally built as an artists’ space and gallery, the Silver Street Studios have been converted into a comfortable and cosy, two storey residence. The building is a well known South Fremantle icon which carries many a story within its walls. Located between Fremantle proper and beautiful South Beach, the Studio is ideally situated very near the coast and all the facilities South Fremantle’s culinary hub has to offer. The downstairs level was originally built as a sculpture studio. Old wharf timbers from the old wool stores and historic Rob Jetty adjoin weathered limestone blocks recycled from an old Fremantle church setting a timeless mood to this creative space. The Studio turret was rescued from the former Swanbourne Hospital in the late 70s and now shines a soft light on Silver Street at night. This eclectic mix of interesting memorabilia creates a lovely ambiance. On arrival, one enters the property from the Silver Street Laneway via a small ‘hobbit’ door. This sits within a larger wooden, ‘medieval’, gate supported by high limestone walls which hide a lush private courtyard. Huge glass sliding doors connect this leafy outdoor area to the main living space which is well equipped and beautifully furnished. The upper level, originally used as a ceramics studio, is reached by an industrial steel staircase which opens into the bedroom where a queen size loft bed is fitted with quality bedding and sheets. A mezzanine walkway connects to a large open plan bathroom/ dressing room where shower, vanity WC, washing machine, clothes storage are located and a small upstairs sitting area. This space leads onto the north facing veranda which houses a recently restored, four claw bath..... beautiful in summer, perhaps a little chilly in the winter months. The former kiln room to the left is now used as a quiet reading room or extra study. There is a second WC, Balinese washbasin and outside shower situated in the north facing corridor courtyard which is great when returning from the beach, eating alfresco or when having a BBQ. Everything in Fremantle is walkable however, two bikes are kept in the downstairs store room and we are happy to loan them out. It is a perfect way to get around town. There is also the regular public bus service on South Terrace which stops at the train station for those going into Perth
